Grade "A" veneer permits: (a) Sound tight knots up to 20 mm measured across the grain; (b) Use of filler to fill splits up to 6 mm and chipped or open areas up to 12 mm in maximum dimension; (c) Minor surface roughness, including slight grain imperfections
and/or sanding and (d) Tight splits, streaks, and discolourations; (e) Wood inlay patches up to 60 mm in width; single patches, any number; double patches not wider than 100 mm where one patch overlaps another, any number. Clusters of patches, where more than two patches are interconnected, are not permitted; and (f) Synthetic patches up to 75 mm in width when measured across the grain of the panel, provided that open defects so repaired do not exceed the maximum size permitted in this Standard. |
|
Grade "B" Veneer (4.1.2) |
In addition to the characteristics permitted in Grade "A" veneer, Grade "B" veneer permits: (a) Sound tight knots up to 40 mm measured across the grain; (b) Use of filler to fill splits up to 6 mm in width and chipped
areas or openings up to (c) Grain imperfections; (d) Spits and other openings up to 5 mm in width; limited to a maximum of six per ply; and (e) Wood inlay patches, whether singly or in combination, up to a maximum of 100 mm in width measured across the grain.

Grade "C" Veneer (4.1.3) |
In addition to the characteristics permitted in Grade "B"
veneer, Grade "C" veneer permits:
(a) Sound knots in outer plies up to 50 mm measured across the grain, limited to a maximum of nine per ply; (b) Sound knots in inner plies up to 50 mm measured across the grain; (c) Knot-holes in outer plies up to 32 mm measured across the grain and knot-holes up to 40 mm measured across the grain, limited to nine per ply; (d) Knot-holes in inner plies up to 40 mm measured across the grain; (e) Pitch pockets up to 25 mm in least dimension; (f) Splits tapering to a point: (g) Worm or borer holes up to 15 mm in width and 38 mm in length; and (h) Other characteristics in number and size that will not affect the serviceability of the panel.

Note: Characteristics permitted in Clauses 4.1.2 and 4.1.3 are related to a 1200 mm x 2400 mm area. For other areas the number of characteristics permitted is proportionate.
